The Keyes Award
Dr. Edward L. Keyes, founder of the Association, died in 1924. Since the Association was considering the award of some sort of prize to a member who had made notable contribution to progress in urology, it was decided that this prize should take the form of a gold medal as a memorial to Dr. Keyes. The council appointed a committee of three to investigate a worthy recipient. The first presentation of the medal took place at the Congress of American Physicians and Surgeons at Washington, D.C., in May 1933; its recipient was Dr. Alfred Newton Richards, of Philadelphia, for his researches on the kidney. At the 1974 meeting, the Membership voted that the Keyes Medal might be cast in bronze because of the increased cost of gold.
The Keyes Medal is presented to an individual for their “outstanding contributions in the advancement of Urology.” It is recognized as the greatest individual citation in the specialty and it has been awarded sparingly.
